CD Reviews

MISTITLED, YET SLAMMING
Eddie Landsberg | Tokyo, Japan | 07/23/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Groove Holmes was a "legend of Acid Jazz" and these cuts groove, but the funny thing about it was that his true FUNK stuff was recorded on another label and most of it is out of print. What you hear on this album is a heavy GROOVING Jazz organist, but these aren't the cuts that really demonstrate him kicking the funk - - the stuff where he has the wa wa guitar going behind him, a moog on top of the organ, and is ACTUALLY kicking basslines on a Nova bass unit between ripping lines and chords. The closest you'll get to that on CD is Night Glider and Troboudors of Groove maybe - - but really you have to search high and low for the heavy sh** he was doing in the early '70s. HOWEVER, don't get me wrong... I'm *NOT* trying to dissuade you from getting this album. Noooooooooooo-sir-eee... this may not be a compilation of his grooveadelic slam jams, however, this is a compilation of incredibly slamming Jazz organ grooves, with Groove's trademark of drive, grease and slick licks. Then go out to some used record stores, and look for his out of print stuff on labels like GROOVE MERCHANT etc. You will however, enjoy this album... because GROOVE definitely earned his name !"
A PIONEER AND A MODEL FOR THE FUTURE JAZZ ORGANIST LIKE JOEY

"This album was recorded by the legendary Rudy Van Gelder in the New Jersey Studio on February 14 and August 26, 1968 and was remasterd for the cd by Kirk Felton in 1997.

So the sound is great and in High quality !!!!!!!!!

I LOVE THIS CD, that to me is the best cd of this Jazz organist !!!

If you love the Organ Jazz or simply the Jazz, you absolutely have to cop it !!!

The organ tune (the organ sound timbre tonality ) is great and will be a model for the topical jazz organist Tony Monaco and Joey Defrancesco.

Listen to "Incredible by Joey DeFrancesco (Audio CD - 2000)" or "Burnin' Grooves by Tony Monaco" ans you will recognize the style and the organ tune of Groove Holmes !!!!!!!!!!

For this session, nearly all tracks are in OGD Trio ( organ - guitar - Drums ).

Enjoy it !!!!!!!!! and God Bless !!!!!!!!!!!

P.S.:Check up my 3 listmanias about the ORGAN JAZZ, also in the American version of this website !!! There are120 albums from the best selection for you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
