Synopsis

Album Description
Rhibosome are Dave McKinney (aka Freestyle's Flow Dynamics), Clayton Chipper, Andrew Selmes, Chad Hedley and George Nikoloudis. Formed at the end of the nineties in their home town of Perth, Australia the band have become a big live draw in their home country. Back in 1998 and a few of the Rhibosome players were busy performing in a Perth street theatre percussion group called Whak, spending their time touring arts festivals around the world including visits to Canada and Singapore. In between utilising wheelie bins as percussion instruments and discovering samplers and drum machines the friends began work creating a live electronic soundscape for the urban circus company, Bizircus. Eventually these tracks started morphing into more of a live set and, after bringing a few more players to the mix, Rhibosome was officially born. Melding live instrumentation with sampled based loops and electronic effects their live show takes in hip hop, funk, house, breakbeat and drum and bass: all of which can be found on this album.

CD Reviews

Australia IS the eclectic dance centre of the world

(5 out of 5 stars)

"The best thing about Oz is the fact that it's so bloody far away from everything that it tends to get the rest of the world's information as one big amalgamated mishmash....This extends to dance music as well, and means that most Oz (and particularly Western Australian bands) get many different influences and styles of music coming at once rather than any real 'streamlining' of music styles that tends to occur in other countries (witness the drum'n'bass, techno, house blah blah catagories that many other dance bands fall into).
Probably the best example of this sort of crossover appeal can be found in the music of the Avalanches, who pretty much throw EVERY music style they encounter into their musical brew...Another great example, is of course Rhibosome. The CD starts off with a funky, fresh house flavour - typical summer club sort of sound. 'Walkin' is a boppy, cruisy sort of house number filled with jazzy snatches ala St Germain. This progressives seamlessly until 'Mutamba', which becomes a sort of two-step, housey hybrid, still maintaining the loose jazzy feel. 'Contact' is a slower, hip hop sort of jam with skratches and a VERY elastic live bass guitar. This all gets blown away with 'Time', a funky drum'n'bass tune that sets the scene for the closer 'Hi-Fi', which is VERY similar to the EZ Rollers style. There's even a cruisy reggae-influenced song in 'Kuchembra'.In short, if you like your CDs to display more than one repetitive style and are interested in seeing what the Aussies can do in the international dance scene, check out Rhibosome."
