CD Reviews

Wumpscut Meets Dead Can Dance?
M. Mierzwa | Davis, CA USA | 10/17/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I was turned onto Germany's the Retrosic back in early 2002 when Metropolis records noted that their second release, Messa da Requiem - which I also highly recommend purchasing, was similar in sound to another one of Germany's famous electronic body music bands: Wumpscut. God of Hell, their third release, still bears some similarity to Wumpscut, but in addition to harsher sounding EBM songs this album also includes two tracks, "Elysium" and "Sphere", that have a more traditional and softer darkwave or ethereal sound. I often described the Retrosic as being a mix of Wumpscut and Dead Can Dance.

It should be noted that God of Hell is considered to be the top 2004 album on the German alternative charts; and for good reason - it really is an amazing album. My favorite track on this release of God of Hell is "Dragonfire".

Be warned! The release of God of Hell being offered here appears to be a single disk. There are three other versions of this album floating around. I bought my version while in Germany, which features a bonus disk titled, Servant of Hell. This version was once sold here on amazon, so you can probably find it in North America. It features a few remixes of songs on the first disk and a new song! Servant of Hell has a greater world music flavor, which I think helps to bridge the gap between the harsh distorted vocals of tracks like "Maneater" and the heavenly voices of "Elysium". As good as the first disk is the bonus disk is even better. In fact, it is so good that a few of my friends have stolen my backup copies.

The good news is that the US release of God of Hell includes one of the original (new) tracks from the Servant of Hell bonus disk: "Passion (First Sign)". This track is simply amazing, so if you are having problems finding a copy of the European version of this album with its bonus disk, then go ahead and buy this disk - you'll only be missing the instrumental (non-dance) remixes."
The Retrosic - God Of Hell

(4 out of 5 stars)

"In 2001, The Retrosic began infecting Europe with their music. 4 years later the U.S. gives props to Metropolis Records for taking on their 2004 release God Of Hell. God of Hell is The Retorsics third release (First release being Prophecy and second release being Messa Da Requiem) and number 1 on the German and Dutch Alternative charts.

God of Hell has also been presented with a few other awards, and it is no surprise. This album has hard-hitting beats blended with soft symphonious undertones and infectious abrasive vocals.

The message is clear... "Destroy the world to save it." The lyrics embark on the truth of the world today that no one is willing to face. Check it out, you will agree. This CD puts you in a vigorous trance with tracks like "Elysium" and "Total War". Ounce for ounce this CD is one you want to definitely check out.

If you like Wumpscut you will like The Retrosic. This CD is a must have for any dance freak. If your local club isn't playing this, BEG THEM TOO!

Rating? 4 Stars. Definitely worth checking out!"
THE CHILD DEVIANT
CRAZOTOLOGY | Joplin, MO. (USA) | 01/07/2007

"This is a great record...one of the best records on the Metropolis label. THE RETROSIC are a band of six talented musicians who bounce around this album from electro-industrial dance beats such as "Storm", "ManEater", "New World Order", and "Antichrist" to slow and brooding songs such as "Elysium", and "Passion". To give you an idea of the music on this album....imagine that WUMPSCUT and DEAD CAN DANCE were thrown into an ellevator and forced to make a record together. THE RETROSIC'S GOD OF HELL is an excellent electro/industrial/ album with some verry well composed moments of gothic drama. BTW, there is also a really cool video for the song "Storm" included on this disc."
