CD Reviews

Unique duet, compelling sound.

"Renaud Garcia-Fons is part French and part Spainard. Mostly he seems to be all Mediterranean. He uses a five-string bass which allows him a higher upper register than the usual four strings. As a result he sounds at times like he is playing a cello or even a viola. Perhaps as a result or because he studied with a truely great arco player, Francois Rabbath, he bows his instrument more frequently than these jazz ears are used to.
He has played over the ears on an extraordinarily diverse ranges of projects from Kip Hanrahan to flamenco with Pedro Soler to Rabih Abou-Khalil to Michel Godard to Nguyen Le. His own music incorprates a similarly broad range of styles; the obvious ones like Piazolla and flamenco but also Arabic and Indian music and French styles like nouveau musette.
On this CD, he is joined by Jean-Louis Matinier on accordian who is equally adept at creating a pan-Mediterranean sound. The results are very compelling- a cornucopia of melodies, sometimes breezy as only the accordian can be, sometimes wildly passionate, sometimes brooding and elegiac(Perpetua).
I suggest you listen to all the music samples that Amazon has for this guy and see what you think. Note how strong all the reveiws are. Garcia-Fons' work is evolving, serious and really enjoyable. We should be paying attention."

"These two players will blow your socks off! I do occasional shows focused on Accordion music and always get calls from listeners about these gifted musicians, who in my humble opinion, are all over the map in their music. It is so dynamic and expressive, the two players are virtuosos and the listening is great. I often use it as background music on other radio programs and I know it gets folks listening. My recommendation- don't wait - get it in your collection. My only regret: not enough published music from these two! The CD title says it all!
