CD Reviews

Smooth country-soul from the '70s and '80s.

"Renaissance Records has released another great disc dedicated to a neglected country singer. This has all of Razzy Bailey's top 10 singles, which feature his effortlessly soulful vocals and a solid pop/country production. I just wish the disc could have included "Night Life," Razzy's stunning cover of the old Willie Nelson song and a popular CMT video at the time of its release. Also, information on Razzy's chart positions would have been nice in the booklet. Still, it's a great disc, and about time these songs are available on CD."
Hot for a couple of years but now forgotten

"Razzy had an impressive run of country hits in the early eighties, but like so many country singers of that era, has faded into obscurity and very little of his material has ever been released on CD.Success came late to Razzy, who wrote the song 9,999,999 in 1966, but had to wait until the late seventies to land a record deal. During the six years that he was with RCA, he had many country hits including several number ones. Nineteen are included here, among them Midnight hauler, Loving up a storm, I keep coming back, Friends, Anywhere there's a jukebox and She left love all over me, every one of which topped the country charts. My particular favorite here, True life country music, also topped the country chart, and is one of the best name-dropping song I've ever heard. Also here are covers of In the midnight hour (Wilson Pickett) and his own 9,999,999 tears, which he finally got a chance to record, fourteen years after he wrote it.Razzy's star shone brightly, if only briefly. His music had elements of several musical styles, including pop and blues as well as country. For those who are less concerned about classification and more concerned about quality, Razzy Bailey recorded some great music."
The only CD collection of his RCA hits

"Razzy Bailey had a string of major hits from 1978 to 1984. This collection contains all of his top 10 hits from that period. Sadly, none of his entire catalog had been available on CD. Renassiance Records came to the rescue in 1999 with "Anthology." You'll find "Friends", "Midnight Hauler", "Anywhere There's A Jukebox", "She Left Love All Over Me" and more. His cover of Willie Nelson's "Night Life" is nowhere to be found on it. If you like late-'70s & early-'80s country, you're gonna like this CD."
