Synopsis

Album Description
Historic recording from 1968/70. Not an opera, nor even an oratorio by our modern definition, The Representation of the Soul and the Body is among the earliest "plays with music" composed for an oratorio or meeting hall for devout laity and clergy. This particular hall, in the church of St. Mary in Vallicella, in Rome, was founded by Filippo Neri, who was later canonized. Composer Emilio de'Cavalieri, a personal friend of St. Philip Neri, lived from about 1550-1602. The present work was first given in 1600. There were two performances, one attended by the entire College of Cardinals.
