"Long Live Rock n' Roll' was for me the pinnacle of Rainbow's career. It took all the ideas from the former, "Rising," & expanded & perfected them. This was RAINBOW, no shadow left of Deep Purple. It was hard, heavy, progressive, a master work of the highest order. It was Ritchie Blackmore's definitive statement of independence, his masterwork that would survive down through generations of heavy metal fans yet to come. The first song "Long Live Rock n' Roll," just thundered out of my speakers, Ronnie James Dio voice thundering right along with the band, it was a wake up call to a band firing on all cylinders! "Lady of the Lake" had a swooning melody in contrast to it's heavy sound, again Ronnie James vocals taking the song to heights that no other vocalist probably could. Blackmore's guitar just wailing along with all the swirling textures & sounds of this great song! "LA Connection," a riff monster of the first order just shook my ears! The exotic & ethereal "Gates of Babylon," with it's middle eastern feel , may well be the best progressive song of Blackmore's career, & once again, that voice of Ronnie, wow! The speed demon, "Kill the King," is probably my favorite cut here, Blackmore just tears through this song, showing some of his best riffs & leads ever! Ronnie of course just roars though it all! The monolithic "The Shed," a heavy piece of 1970's heavy metal axe work! "Sensitive to Light," a great song about magnetism. "Rainbow Eyes," a beautiful ballad, where Ronnie James Dio totally shines! "Long Live Rock n' Roll" is one of 70's heavy metal's shining moments, not to be missed by anyone interested in the roots of heavy metal, Deep Purple or Rainbow. This is history folks! " |
