A RAFF JEWEL GIVEN A FINE PERFORMANCE
K. J. MCGILP | Wanaque, NJ USA | 03/17/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Being an admirer of Raffs symphony #3 "Im Walde", I wanted to hear his "Lenore" symphony #5. I had just recently purchased other Raff symphonies but the Lenore proved to be a bit tougher to obtain. I had it in my possesion in no time through Amazon.com.

Raffs 5th is a standout among his eleven symphonies and it receives a fine performance here by Hans Staldmair and the Bamberg Symphoniker. The sound quality is good though the softer and more quiet passages tend to be a bit recessed. An impressive Suite No.1 For Orchestra fills out the disc. This is a highly enjoyable work. The suites sound quality is very good. A bit more brightly lit than the symphony.

The obvious influences for the symphony are Liszt and Berlioz. Though you can make endless references to one composer or another, the fact remains that Raff had his own unique voice. His fifth symphony is a highly engaging and winning work. The coda is a solemn chorale. Very moving and quite unforgettable when heard. I will not get into the program. Anyone who has come this far towards this fine composers music need not hesitate. The packaging, artwork and notes are excellent.

I must suggest symphonies 3,7,8,9 and 10 as well. There are some good recordings of these works out there!"
