This new album with the Dutch cellist Quirine Viersen combines four compositions that were written at the turn of the century. Written in a romantic style but all with distinct local flavours. Webern and Strauss are very much under the influence of the Viennese elegance of walz and song, Janácek and Kodály are both very much influenced by the folk music of Bohemia. The program gives us a nice insight into the richness of styles and colours in central Europe around 1900. The readings by Quirine Viersen and Silke Avenhaus are passionate and eloquent. It is very clear that they hold this music very near to their hearts.
