A SUBLIME TOSCA BY A WONDERFUL SOPRANO
R. Olsavicky | Butler, Pa. USA | 06/27/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)
"This live broadcast from Vienna 1966 on GOLDEN MELODRAM CDS is an excellent alternative to the 1967 live broadcast from Vienna on MYTO CDS. Fans of Sena Jurinac will not be disappointed; she is in excellent voice. In this broadcast she is partnered with a much better Cavaradossi - Carlo Cossutta. The Soprano and Tenor make the First and Third Acts duets simply beautiful yet thrilling. Jurinac's "Vissi D'arte" is quite simply stunning, ravishing the ear. Carlo Cossutta is absolutely wonderful in the Third Act aria and duet. Hans Hotter is the Scarpia. He is in better voice here then in the Solti Ring; however the wobble is starting to appear. As he warms up this is less noticeable; yet it is always there in various degrees, just not as bad as it would become in a couple of years. The MONO broadcast sound is excellent with very minimal tape hiss or distortion; only the last couple of minutes-starting with the firing squad suffers from a ground hum. The rest is excellent. Sena Jurinac's TOSCA is a young lady wonderfully in love and sung beautifully with gorgeous tone and complete ease. DON'T MISS THIS EXCELLENT EXAMPLE OF LIVE OPERA AT ITS BEST."
