A Great Performance

"Unfortunately, Prokofiev's large ballets were not performed with much acclaim during his lifetime. It was only after his death that they were fully appreciated. Because of this, Romeo and Juliet is known mainly through the suites Prokofiev arranged. But the complete ballet is a true gem.The Kirov Orchestra is essentially a theater orchestra, and their understanding that Romeo and Juliet is music meant to be danced to is evident here. The music is beautifully played capturing the lyricism and rhytmn of the dances. Having played this set many times over the years, I can think of no better complete recoring of Romeo and Juliet than this one."
