CD Reviews

Hard Rock Album Of The Year!!
Thomas J. Schmit | Bismarck, ND | 12/06/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I didn't think an album was going to come out this year that would top House Of Lords - World Upside Down, but Pretty Maids has done just that. From the opening Wake Up To The Real World to the last song Another Shot Of Love, you will NOT be disappointed. It's got a little bit of everything. The rockers are Wake Up To The Real World, All In The Name Of, Why Die For A Lie, Brave Young New World and Terminal Violence. Another Shot Of Your Love and Such A Rush are great melodic songs and there's also some good ballads to boot. They also cover Deep Purple's Perfect Strangers, and do a good job at that, but I would have liked another original tune. I still can't get the song Wake Up To The Real World out of my head! If you like albums that offer a little bit of diversity, then you won't be disappointed. I WASN"T!!"
Another solid Pretty Maids disc

"A lot of people have been touting Pretty Maids latest album Wake Up to the Real World as the best album of 2006. Considering some of the other great melodic rock albums that arrived in 2006 (such as Slamer's Nowhere Land, Circle II Circle's Burden of Truth, and Joe Lynn Turner's Sunstorm), that is high praise indeed. How does Wake Up to the Real World measure up? Read on...

While Pretty Maids can always be counted on to release high quality albums, Wake Up to the Real World is impressive. To my ears, this album is a departure from both the classic metal days of Future World and Lethal Heroes and the more modern rock sounding Spooked and Anything Worth Doing Is Worth Overdoing. Melody is really the key ingredient here, which makes it somewhat less heavy than what I'm used to hearing from these guys. It reminds me a lot of recent Harem Scarem efforts, which isn't necessarily a bad thing! There are still some heavy hitters on the album, such as the title track and Brave Young New Breed. The band's cover of Deep Purple's Perfect Strangers is another highlight.

Wake Up to the Real World is another high quality Pretty Maids release, even by the band's already high standards. It's definitely one of 2006's better albums, but I'd rank it somewhere below the albums I listed earlier.
