CD Reviews

Good intro to Lu, but not the whole story!

(4 out of 5 stars)

"This combination disc features the majority, BUT NOT ALL, of the tracks from Poor Old Lu's first two official releases, "Mindsize" (1993) and "Sin" (1994). The tracks are in the same order as they originally appeared on record, so you'll get to hear how the sound evolved and consider each album on its own merits. However, to fit two great albums onto one 80-minute CD, the record company left off "Peapod" from "Mindsize", as well as "Sickly", "Come Unto Me", and hidden track "Army Guy" from "Sin". This has angered a lot of fans, especially because "Sickly" was one of Scott Hunter's (vocalist) dfavorite tracks. Also, the record was assembled without the band's approval, so the consideration of tracklist and the liner notes were not done by someone who was too knowledgeable about the band. The music itself is great, though...these are the records that launched Poor Old Lu's career in Christian alternative rock. Moments of grunge give way to introspective balladry. "Sin" is especially effective in showing how the music had matured. Guitarist Aaron Sprinkle even takes the mic on "Ring True", and the album is full of energy and emotion. So, you get a lot of Poor Old Lu for your money, but not quite a full version."
