Despite his reputation for eccentricity Vladimir de Pachmann (1848-1933) made beautiful records alongside some of his zanier traversals. All the pianist's 1915/16 Columbias are gathered here. The best ones (Raff's La Fileuse, the Chopin Mazurkas, D Flat Nocturne, and Liszt's Rigoletto Paraphrase and E Major Polonaise) reveal a small-scale but elegant pianist capable of delicate, shaded fingerwork. Transfers are adequate, but not ideal. --Jed Distler
