CD Reviews

1994 CD release gave the bounty hunters....
William Blackshear | West Orange, NJ USA | 02/07/2006
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Their reprieve! Prior to that the 1966 released 45, "He'll Be Back" and the same titled album, had bounties placed on both, as soul/sweet soul collectors searched nationwide for years to locate. The haunting ballad was a "given" in basement 45 record stacks in urban areas across the nation, and was played heavily at "Par(ties)" long after it left the R&B charts. The record so captured an emotion during the Vietnam War era, that teens at the time could not help but play it. Many old-schoolers from the day know the title but had forgotten the name of the group. Collectibles label 1994 cd release made the music of "The Players" once again availible to all, a welcome back! The group's 1966 follow-up, another haunting ballad, "Glad You Waited", was a sleeper to many. On the writer's mid-90s soul oldies radio show, it became a request. This cd encompasses their only lp release, including the original interesting cover (that record collectors so covet). The quality of the cd is very good, and there are a few other interesting tracks. However, stand alone classics "Hell Be Back" & "Glad I Waited" weather the test of time, a pleasure to hear today. Needless to say, the belief is the cd is already entrenched in one's old-school soul music collection, if not, it's buy time."

"This is smooth listening music that brings back memories of my tour in Vietnam and the times we were in then. For any service member who served in Vietnam or for any girl friend or wife who was left behind during that tour this song and album are filled with thoughts and memories. The words are clear, and the meaning has impact. The sound has rythm, but it is smooth and comforting. This oldie is a must for anyone desiring good music of a critical time in history."
