Piano Concerto enthusiasts -- here's one you should try
04/14/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"As a piano concerto enthusiast myself, I have listened to the best concertos of all of the great composers -- (some of my favorites are Scriabin's Concerto, Beethoven's "Emperor" Concerto, Rachmaninoff's 2nd and 3rd, and D'Albert's 2nd). For some reason, the more rare it is, the better. Pizzetti's concerto is a great piece of music, and is worthy of recognition. Pizzetti's wonderful use of orchestration, sensitive approach to structure, and his colorful palate of harmony make this a wonderful piece of music."

"Having read and learned a lot about Pizzetti I've always wondered how his music would sound. After buying the Hyperion disc with some very descriptive and beautifully crafted music I decided to order this one. It didn't disappoint but the other disc is better on content. Performance, recording and presentation here are all good, but the music is less interesting than on Vanska's disc. You can't have it all. Probably there're other works by this composer that deserve a recording. Some years ago I attended a concert performance of his opera Fedra in Amsterdam and, although very costly to record and produce I think, that could be a prime candidate. If they did tape that reading I hope it must be possible for an adventurous record label to put it on disc."
