CD Reviews

The best sound coming from GREECE at the moment
G.Kraniou | Athens, Salonica, Melbourne | 12/14/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I will have to start with a friendly objection to the Amazon people and note that Pix-Lax is not in RUSSIAN language but GREEK. Pix-Lax, is a band that was formed in the northwest Supburbs of Athens form a bunch of high school friends. What they didn't now back then was that 10 years in the future they would be the most repfreshing, original and insired songwritesrs of Greek contemporary music spanning from rock-pop sounds to folk.Fillipos Pliatsikas, one of the funders of the band, is probably the A and the Omega of popular Greek music today, writting songs not only for the band but for many other artist that are not necessarily rock performers. This is a group with 5 different sounds, if I counted them correctly! there are three lead vocalists-singers, Fillipos Pliatsikas, Manos Xidous and Babis Stokas, each with an aneaqualed depthnes in their voices, each with a unique style of singing, that enables them to sing anything form soft-sweet love ballads to angry rock tunes. They are supported from a long cast of friends and musicians each delivering an astonishing performance in their own right. This CD as most of Pix-Lax's, contain a variety of sounds, including the "rocky" electric guitars and great acoustic guitars sounds, followed by accordions, violins, cellos, flutes, mandolins, baglamadakia, gonata ( or tsoures), keibords, tamporins, to deliver probably the most representative sound of Greece today. If you want to hear what Greece sounds like get this (or any other of their CDs). This is the sound of the west combined with the musical influences of the east, coming straight from an ancient tradition aging two-thousand years and more. This CD in particular, I think number five in their collection, contains everything from soft, lyrical ballads to high, up beat tempo, pop tunes. It even has a remake (in greek) of an old Bob Dylan classic, Tales of Yankee Power (Senor). Starting with the high beat "monaksia mou ola" -"my lonliness" and the steady solid love song "epapses agapi na thimizis" ("sicne you stoped reminding me of love"), it becomes a contemporary musical fairy tail of everyday-life, in tracks like "falcheta" ('jackknife") and "akoma tipota then ides" (you haven't seen anything yet") still keeping plenty of nice surprises till the end.Going against the tide of modern mass-marketed, mass produced, and totally uninspired and completely bad-tasted chart music that flogs the Greek CD shops at the moment, P.L. deliver a unique, original, creative and inspired performance. If you are to buy a Greek music CD this year, weather Greek or not , make sure it's by Pix-Lax."
