Exemplary French Hip-hop
Orlando | Burbank, CA USA | 02/06/2001
(4 out of 5 stars)

"The problem most people have when searching the market for French hip-hop, aside from not being exposed to it on the radio, is the simple fact that they don't understand the language. Those who know the french tongue however, agree that Pit Baccardi is a master in lyricism and delivery. But beyond that, those who don't know the language can appreciate his style and the organic feel of the beats produced by various internationally-known producers. He has a drive and energy that makes you vibe to the tunes.Although I've heard some critics say Baccardi can be at times monotone and lacking of emotion, particularly live, I personally think that in this album (which I picked up on one of my visits to Paris some years ago, and is much better than its successor, "Ghetto Ambianceur"), he has a swinging delivery, moreso than many hip-hop imports. In this self-titled first release, Pit Baccardi exhibits his range: from the emotional "Si loin de toi", dedicated to his missing mother, to "Profession MC," the typical self-saluting egotrip. "C'est Plus Fort Que Moi," is a commentary on the rap business while "Une journée de dealer" tells of a day in the life of a drug dealer. Other tracks of note are "Carpe Diem," "Sexcitations," and "On lâchera pas l'affaire." If you like MC Solaar and are more into the grimy, underground French hip-hop than some of the Paris-pop-rap, then pick up this first album from the ill French Hip-Hop master, Pit Baccardi.Other artists of similar style to look into: Oxmo Puccino, Suprême NTM, Akhenaton."
