CD Reviews

The Grand Ole 'Rock' Opry Takes on Led Zep
Sharon Lamey | Roselle, IL United States | 01/03/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"It's not too far a stretch from the blues-inspired jams of Led Zeppelin to the bluegrass takes offered on these CDs. These instrumental versions of many LZ classics are performed essentially by studio musicians, I guess, since they fall under the "various artists' banner. These artist do justice to LZ's catalog, there's no mistaking the tunes, but the bluegrass flavor compliments the originals nicely. "No Quarter", "Your Time is Gonna Come", and "Gallows Pole" translate very well into their new versions. Would have loved to hear "Dazed and Confused.""
Metalhead turns bluegrass

"being a big fan of heavy metal and rock, especially zeppelin, sabbath, alice in chains, guns n roses etc., i was turned on to this cd by one of my banjo playin' buddies. although i am also a big fan of allison krauss, i never gave the blugrass sound much props in my music world. this cd changed that for me! my beloved zeppelin done in bluegrass style? well let me tell ya....as far as tributes go, and i have heard many...this one does the beauty of led zeppelins music, and takes it, and me, into the wonderful world of bluegrass. i have since purchased the eagles, allman brothers and the bluegrass sampler cd's, and also acquired works by alison brown and bela fleck, amongst others. i have been playing them endlessly, enjoying all the nuances of the variuos stringed instruments and the way they have been arranged by these truly amazing "pickers". needless to say, i think more of these fine "pickin' on" series cds will be gracing my cd collection and be stored on my ipod!!"
