CD Reviews

Good music, but very poor performance

"If you listen to the Six Popular Paintings played by Manos Hadjidakis himself in another CD made by Greek EMI and Lyra records (the CD has a white cover, and includes also the ballet about the Serpent) you will realize that Kara has done a very poor job of interpreting Hadjidakis. Her version is boring and uninteresting, and is not fair to the composer in my opinion."
Contemporary sounds of Greece

"This is a wonderful release indeed.Hadjidakis' way with melodies is apparent in these piano pieces from different stages of his composing career. The composer of the legendary sound track to "Never on Sunday" takes the folk music of his native land and puts his special imprint on it. Hadjidakis' music obviously is contemporary but it never strays far from its roots in traditional song and dance. Each work is different and each is fascinating. The "Six Popular Paintings" are the most overtly "Greek," with lilting folk rhythms. "Rhythmologia" present a series of tone pictures in increasingly quicker tempos (all in eighths), interspersed with folk-dance paeans to different zodiacal signs. If you enjoy the earthiness of the Greek sound, and are adventurous for new approaches in music, this CD will entertain over and over."
