Synopsis

Album Description
A compilation of three "off the beaten track" piano solos, "Piano Works" offers major works from three periods. The Czech composer Jan Ladislav Dussek (1760-1812) wrote about 450 compositions, the core of which are his piano sonatas, concertos, and chamber works with piano. Dussek was influenced by the classicism of Haydn and Mozart in his compositional form and design, but his bold modulations and colorful harmonies were expresions of romanticism. Op. 9/3 reflects Dussek's own virtuosic technique and pushes the limit of technical possibilities of his contemporary instruments. Franz Schubert (1797-1828) paved the way from classicism toward romanticism with his lyric themes that develop episodically. Written three six months before his death, the 3 Piano Pieces, D946 reflect his mortal suffering as well as his belief that he would meet something better after his death. Heitor Villa Lobos (1887-1959)is Brazil's most famous composer. His compositional style was influenced by late Romantic and Impressionistic music and strongly based on national elements. Brazilian Cycle is filled with folk idioms and colorful sounds and rhythms from the jungles and rain forests.
