Serdar has the most astonishingly beautiful tone
Robert L. Berkowitz | Natick, MA United States | 08/19/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This CD is far too neglected, and it is unfortunate we have no more examples of Serdar's playing. This is some of the finest piano playing to be heard anywhere. I have written separately about Serdar's performance of Chopin's Andante Spianato and Grande Polonaise (see "Chopin: The Romantic Pianist" EMI Classics ASIN# B00009QG7R), but the rest of this CD is fully worthy of equal praise. Serdar has the most lovely caressing limpid touch and he puts it to wonderful use in this choice of repertoire. The CD begins with a sonata by Galuppi, who is not commonly heard. The music is immediately appealing and shows off Serdar's wonderful tone and articulation. Then we proceed to Chopin's Andante Spianato and Grande Polonaise in what I believe is the best solo recording available for this piece. I place this performance above those by Yundi Li (of whom I am a great admirer), Rubinstein, Horowitz (whose Chopin at times can be wayward but always interesting), Louis Lortie and Abbey Simon, all of whose recordings I have come to enjoy. Serdar's performances of Mendelssohn's Variations Serieuses, the Brahms Waltzes and the Bach-Busoni Chaconne are second to none.

The recorded sound is vivid and pleasing. This Debut Recital disc was recorded in 1997. I think it is very unfortunate that no one has thought to provide Serdar with an opportunity to record some more. He is worth hearing."
