Synopsis

These piano concertos, written in the late 1820's, sound as though they were greatly influenced by Chopin. But it's the other way around. Hummel, the favorite pupil of Mozart, performed in Warsaw two years before Chopin left that city for Paris. The themes, the style, even the orchestration of Chopin's two concertos sound very much like Hummel's. Even if Hummel's music isn't on quite the same level of inspiration as Chopin's, these works will prove a fascinating discovery for lovers of Romantic music. The no-name performers do their job extremely well, and Lahusen's inflection is thoroughly evocative of Chopin. An esoteric but fascinating release. Two more fine Hummel concertos await the curious in Stephen Hough's electrifying performances. --Leslie Gerber

CD Reviews

One of the great finds of the century
06/10/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Surely the F major concerto celebrates the absolute joy of music. This work alone is a hit on our concert radio listeners request sessions. They love it and it has been requested a stagering 5 times - this is more than any other work in the past year. Its greatest quality is the exemplication of the free spirit in us all. Lahusen captures this quality brilliantly - you can also feel the spirit flowing through the work as freely as wind blowing through your hair. This work alone could make Hummel great again and deserves to be listed as one of the great works of the late classical era."
