Synopsis

Album Description
Telepathy Records is pleased to announce the release of Brooklyn Waters, the culmination of over a decade of collaboration between drummer/percussionist Pheeroan akLaff and pianist/keyboardist Michael Cain. Their first full release as co-leaders, the album draws the listener on a unique journey of acoustic and electric sounds, freely constructed and dymanically executed. The music is grounded in the streets of Brooklyn, New York, echoing the vibrations of the asphalt that both akLaff and Cain call home, while stretching beyond the boundaries of where jazz lives at the turn of a new century. From Michael Cain: "Much of the music from this recording we have been playing together, in a variety of settings, for a long time now, and this particular recording only captures one version of these pieces, during one session, at one point in time. Had we recorded the following week instead of the week we did, the result would have been very different." That result is an album that balances itself between modern free jazz and the new cross-genre voices of improvisational music. It strikes out boldly against the streamlined neo-classicism rampant in jazz today. Brooklyn Waters sounds less like a statement from established and acclaimed jazz artists and more like a communication of emotions, sights, and knowledge, transmitted through a vital and familiar connection between two sympathetic musicians. According to Cain himself: "I value being able to capture moments in time in the process of music making, being able to learn from it and share it with others. Brooklyn Waters is only a moment in time where the process is eternal. It is more a reflection than a statement." Produced by Pheeroan akLaff and Michael Cain, Brooklyn Waters is a production of Native Drum Music, Inc., administered by Telepathy Records.

CD Reviews

Some of Cain's best work!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"I've been a fan of Michael Cain since his days with Jack DeJohnette, and while his solo debut album Circa (on ECM) was great, I think Brooklyn Waters is some of his best work ever, and certainly his best recording under his own name. Not to ignore Pheeroan akLaff, by any means, his playing meshes wonderfully with Cain's, and you can tell that these two know each other well. Also, this isn't mentioned above, but the album contains only original music by Cain and akLaff, with some pieces co-written, and the two seem all the more inspired to jam on their own compositions. Plus the CD is beautifully packaged, with an attention to detail that you don't see often with a jazz album. Check it out!"
