CD Reviews

A Versatile and Endearing Performer
Steve Rawlings | Denver, CO USA | 03/02/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Petula Clark was an accomplished performer long before she was recognized in the U.S. with her immortal hit, "Downtown." She has sold over 68 million records in her career, a testament to her universal and enduring appeal. This 4-CD, 80-track set captures the boundless energy and optimism of her Top 40 hits of the mid to late 60's, and then provides an opportunity for her to demonstrate her versatility with other American and French selections, including "Cherish," "Close to You," and "L'Amour Viendra." Her music is most often soaring and infectious, yet she can also exhibit a lush and layered sensuality.Part of the magic of her appeal is the quality of the composers, arrangers, and conductors who surround and accentuate her interpretive talents. Tony Hatch contributed to many of her hits, including "I Know a Place," "My Love," and "Round Every Corner." Her musical accompaniment is impeccable...sharp, clear brass; soaring strings; rich, deep bass; and rhythmic percussion that combine to form the beat and backdrop to a voice ringing with strength, clarity, and matchless beauty. There will never be another Petula Clark !"
The 4 CD collection is wonderful and a very good value.

""The Classic Collection" is a wonderful collection and a very good value for 80 songs. If you're looking for the hits, they are in this collection. If you're a fan looking for other music Petula sings, then you'll love the 2 CD's in this collection called The Song Stylist. I agree with the person who said "I Want To Hold Your Hand" is the best version he ever heard - I think so too. The French version of "Gone With the Wind" is in the collection - it's called "L'Amour Viendra" and it's beautiful. "Two Rivers", "Cranes Flying South", and "Converstions in the Wind" are songs I'd never heard before, but they're really wonderful. So if you want to get a lot for your money and get some surprises, this is a good set to buy."
Incredible Music Value!

"80 songs from "The World's Greatest Singer". If you're not interested in buying every Petula Clark album out there (and there are dozens), get this set. 4 CDs for the price of one filled with the incredibly fun "hits" and a collection of notable songs from this gifted song stylist. Petula is still going strong, but this is a walk down memory lane. BUY IT!"
