(5 out of 5 stars)

"Pete Jolly who was a know fixture on the West Coast scene of 50's came out with this geem in 1993 after a 23 year layoff recording under his name. But he had been with his bassist Chuck Berghofer and Drummer from the 50's and mid 60's respectively.A generation of playing together make this unit run like a swiss watch. But on this excellent collection of standards it's is the speed and power with which Jolly hammers them out that leaves you in awe when you listen.Rather than these young lions (Mehldau et. al.) who have technique to burn but no soul this CD is done with a utterly without pretension and moves like a Swiss clock.Truly a recording that should leave you in awe without any weak cuts. Also check out Yeah! on VSOP.A totally different unique LP that has been re-released by Dusty Groove that is also worth checking out yet totally different than an any Jolly effort is "Four Seasons" with eletronic instruments by Herb Alpert on A&M.Not a fan of that type of playing bu it is anything other Dave Grusin film music. It's totally funky. This is a man who, like Al Haig (but more so) was very much under recorded.Who knew listening to the great West Coast horn men like Pepper et. al that this genius who laid down a strong foundation had the chops to be a star. And unlike many folks like Tina Brooks or Johhny Hartman I doubt he will become a posthumous star but this CD is a freakin' burner.
