CD Reviews

Nite Life with Peace Division
07/08/2002
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Let's face it in the world of DJ mix compilations, it is easy to put one out. Get 10 - 15 records together, beat match them and your set. So it is understandable that there are several continuing series of mix CD's. What is hard to find are series that don't let you down. NRK's Nite Life has put out ten thus far from H:Foundation, DJ Garth, to a Joeski & Oinionz double disc set, all top notch DJ's and mixes. So now with NRK's latest release of a Peace Division mix they continued with their standard of high quality mixes. Peace Division made up of Clive Henry and Justin Drake are first rate producers who have had their tracks bolstered by the likes of John Digweed and Carl Cox, now show that they are also first rate DJ's as well with a subtle dubbed out mix. These guys are not going for flash they are going for groove. The tracks they have chosen bring one another out in a flawless mix, and because the tracks are sometimes so similar and allowed to play out you often cannot tell where one track ends and the next begins. There are build ups, however you don't really notice them until they have dropped the beat and you find yourself nodding along with the music. Justin and Clive seemed to focus more on the track selection, positioning, and less on attention calling mixes giving the CD and overall even feel. Their hands off approach to mixing is oddly remincent of Ritchie Hawtin's approach and style of mixing yet entirely their own voice. This is a solid mix and buy."
