"Paul Smoker has become one of the leading jazz trumpet players in the world today. He spent about thirty years leading up to the 1980's playing a host of musical styles (classical music, New Music, funk, salsa, Broadway shows, and a whole lot of bebop), paying his dues, and also playing with some people like Dodo Marmarosa and Lee Konitz. In the early 80's, following work with Anthony Braxton, he formed his trio (with Ron Rohovit on bass and Phil Haynes on percussion), the one heard here, and with that group made his reputation. He has since played with Evan Parker, Marilyn Crispell, Herb Robertson, and Gerry Hemingway, among others. This album is his trio's fifth.
GENUINE FABLES shows a great trio at work playing blues, bebop, funk, and perhaps 'avant-garde' with vigor and passion. It's an album that younger players need to hear, and everyone can enjoy."
