CD Reviews

Superb remastering of a superb collection of recordings.

(5 out of 5 stars)

"This collection of Robeson songs is a remarkable remastering of his old tapes, many of which, in posession of his son, had not been heard publicly in decades. Of all the Robeson CDs available, this is by far technically the best, and contains a large variety of material, beautifully sung. It is immediately clear upon hearing this why his amazing voice and presence were so revered. Recommended to all."
A Great Selection of Songs with Remarkable Sound Clarity

(5 out of 5 stars)

"I own a number of Paul Robeson CDs and this is one my favorites. Frankly, many recordings of Robeson have a low or even poor sound quality - not surprising given the time period when many of the recordings were made. This is a shame, as they don't do justice to the incredible instrument of his voice. When I first played this CD I was stunned by the sound quality - it is that good. On that basis alone I could recommend this CD. The song selection is excellent, too. One of my favorite selections on this CD is 'John Henry'. 'Balm in Gilead' and 'Star Vicino' are both incredibly spiritual and moving songs. This CDs' rendition of 'Water Boy' is by far the best of all his recordings of that particular song. You can tell that Robeson had a lot of fun in singing 'Curly Headed Baby' and 'Oh No John' - they both sparkle. I highly recommend this CD."
