CD Reviews

A great singer to be discovered
09/10/1999
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Pat Lewis is far from the most famous former Motown artist to join British producer Ian Levine's mega-ambitious Motorcity project (1989-93), she spent most of her Motown years doing thousands of backing vocals as a member of The Andantes, but what a thrill to hear her sing out her heart on this collection! Pat Lewis is a very competent singer with a sweet yet mature voice, and the 18 songs are all very nice pop tunes, in fact it's one of the most coherent anthologies in the Motorcity catalogue. "Separation" is very, very classy, it was Single Of The Week in UK magazine "Blues & Soul" upon its release in 1991, but sadly very underrated. Another stand out track is "I've Heard It All Before" which has the sound of the 90s while "Sweetest Feeling" is a throw-back to Philly soul of the 70s. The Motown sound of the 60s are captured with the covers of "Selfish One", "Darkest Days", and "Come On And See Me", not to overlook the brilliant original "This Thing Called Love", and the synthesizer arrangements work a lot better than on the majority of Levine's 60s-reworked tracks for Motorcity. It's hard to imagine any soul fan who would be disappointed by this collection, personally I look forward to hearing more of Pat Lewis on Hot Productions "The Best Of The Andantes", scheduled for release next year."
