Synopsis

Dizzy Gillespie built the bridge between North American jazz and Cuban dance music when he hired Havana percussionist Chano Pozo in 1947. A bridge wasn't enough for Gillespie, however; he wanted a whole infrastructure. So the trumpeter organized the United Nation Orchestra in 1988 as an ongoing institution where North American and Latin American musicians could meet to exchange ideas and trade licks. The big band has outlived its founder, and on its new album, A Night in Englewood, the United Nation Orchestra pays tribute to Gillespie, the most illustrious resident ever of Englewood, New Jersey. --Geoffrey Himes
