CD Reviews

PAPPOs is THE guitar !
ANDRES JULIO NEIRA | BUENOS AIRES | 06/15/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Perhaps it is not so easy to me, the communication in English because it is not my first language. I live in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in the same country and the same city where Pappos lives. Obviously Pappo Nappolitano sing in Spanish. He is not a good singer, but his fame is due to his ability as guitarist. He is very fast with his fingers and he plays shows with B.B. King and Eric Clapton. Pappo appears in scene at the end of sixties with the local group LOS GATOS. This band was -perhaps- the first serious intent of ROCK in Argentina and South America. With the dissolution of Los Gatos, Pappo perform one of the most important groups of Rock of the seventies, named Pappo's Blues. Pappo's Blues was very famous as part of the MUSICA PROGRESIVA ARGENTINA. "PROGRESIVA" comes of progress, and really his music contribute to the progress of this kind of music here. The leader of this group was always Pappo Nappolitano, sun of the Italian immigration in Buenos Aires. The mix of "Italian" with the own characteristics of the "porteños" (people who lives in Buenos Aires) and very influenciated by the big British groups, as also Elvis and Hendrix, have produced PAPPO. If you like Hendrix or B.B. King, or if you would like to know the style of the south American rock, you must choose PAPPOs. Besides, if you also speaks Spanish, you can appreciate very much. Please, you must change the Artist. The right name is Pappo. Edmundo Rivero is also from Argenitna but he is a famous singer of TANGO (and he is not related at all with Pappo)"

"A few days ago Pappo passed away in a motorcycle accident in Argentina. He was one of the most renowned guitar players of this country, an essential founder member part of what it was named "Rock Argentino" with bands like Almendra, Los Gatos, Vox Dei, Arco Iris, Manal, etc. A musician closely related to the "Easy Rider" generation, with clear preferences towards hard rock and blues. Pappo's Blues and Riff were his famous line ups, which he led with his extraordinary charisma. For all music lovers with less knowledge of south american rock and blues, this is a good beginning to listen a musician that had an enormous influence in a generation that grew up with his songs."
