"I only wish that these guys released more albums then they did. These guys are excellent musicians and they blend all the pieces together very well. This re issue of there first two recordings is every bit as amazing as the third."

"Pan Thy Monium is absolutely one of the strangest bands I've ever come across. The term "avant-garde" doesn't even begin to describe what this Swedish extreme metal band, which features former Edge of Sanity and current Nightingale mainman Dan Swano under a variety of aliases, is all about.

I suppose Pan Thy Monium is a death metal band. It's certainly heavy and the vocals are all growled. The lyrics are in Swedish, but it really doesn't matter because Swano uses this constant monotone "grrrrrrrrrrrr" that you can't tell for certain if he's using words at all. There's nothing remotely resembling melody here, and plenty of atmospheric, keyboard, and noise elements. It feels like it could touch on jazz fusion at times, but that disappears almost as soon as you notice it. I'd probably call it art rock if it weren't so brutal.

I'm a fan of most of Dan Swano's other projects, but ultimately these albums were just too damned weird for me. Swano and company are obviously very creative, but this must be over my head. If you're an open-minded (and I mean really open-minded) extreme metal fan, by all means give Pan Thy Monium a try. You have to give the albums a few spins, and even then I can't promise you'll like them or even be able to grasp what the hell you just heard.

NOTE: Osmose/SPV reissued both full-length Pan Thy Monium albums (1992's Dawn of Dream and 1993's Khaooohs) in 2001. The albums have been digitally remastered and come in a gatefold digipack.
