Synopsis
Album Description Paddy Tutty's fourth album "In the Greenwood" was recorded in Ottawa during the aftermath of the 1998 ice storm, a time when Canada's attention was turned toward the ravages suffered by southern Ontario and Quebec. It is fitting that Mother Nature was uppermost in Paddy's mind during the recording sessions, for the elements of nature have figured prominently in her music over the years. In her new collection of mainly traditional folk songs, Paddy accompanies herself on guitar, fretted dulcimer, fiddle, anglo-concertina and harpsichord. She has also enlisted the talents of several respected Canadian musicians: John Geggie (double bass), Andy Daub (whistles and Uilleann pipes), Ian Tamblyn (keyboards, guitar, hammered dulcimer, harmonium, zither and piano), and Kathy Armstrong (Kroboto, log drum, doumbek and tambourine). Backing up Paddy vocally are Wendy Davis and Shelley Posen as well as, on one track, an ad hoc chorus from the Ottawa Folklore Centre. Produced by Ian Tamblyn, "In the Greenwood" is a celebration of human courage, the power of love and nature's wonders. In addition to traditional ballads and songs, Paddy draws on the works of modern day composers such as Laurie Lewis, Brian Pearson and Matthew Manera (whose previously unrecorded composition The Road to Heaven appears here). Rounding out the collection are several dance tunes discovered by Paddy during her continued study of the music of Britain and France. "In the Greenwood" is the latest in a series of recordings that reflect Paddy's deep admiration for traditional music of past centuries. With this project, as in her previous albums, she captures the warmth, joy and passion inherent in this most humane form of music. |
CD ReviewsThis is certain to become one of my favorite CD's. Ann Simmons | 07/04/2000 (5 out of 5 stars) "I heard The Maple's Lament performed at a fiddle workshop and knew I had to hear this CD. I was not disappointed. Paddy Tutty's voice is beautiful, and the selection of songs is outstanding. If you enjoy Celtic music, I think that you will enjoy this CD."
