Synopsis

Oliver Mtukudzi's previous album, Tuku Music, was the biggest-selling record in Zimbabwe's history and led to Mtukudzi writing a song with Bonnie Raitt. How do you top that? Simple, you do more of it and refine your sound. Unlike his countryman Thomas Mapfumo, Mtukudzi doesn't go for hypnotic mbira rhythms but for gorgeous melodies, letting his voice sing out on songs like "Ndine Mubvunzo" and "Kunze Kwadoka." "Pindurai Mambo" sees him reworking a piece he wrote in the '70s, and throughout the album his lyrics address injustice at home and throughout the world. His band keeps improving, with Philani Dube on lead guitar a truly tasteful standout. Mtukudzi has come into full maturity on this record with a style that draws from the spectrum of African music, from touches of soukous and benga to the native Shona rhythms that propel it all. Inspirational and enjoyable. --Chris Nickson

CD Reviews

Fun, happy music!

"I was given the first Oliver Mtukudzi CD - Tuku Music, as a gift and absolutely loved it. It is the type of CD you listen to over and over again without tiring of the music. Thus my expectations were set very high for his new CD - Paivepo and it did not disappoint. The music is happy and uplifting with strong rhythms, instrumentals and vocals. I love the song descriptions in the CD jacket which explain each song's theme. I'm a big international music fan and have bought many CDs distributed under the Putumayo World Music label. Whoever finds their artists is a genius, you just can't go wrong. Definitely add this one, and any of the others, to your collection."

"This is a great album.Since you listen you will go to enjoy an album with caribbean influences ,specially the percusion in the last two tracks, you can appreciate clearly PALOS RHTYTHM ,a dance style from Dominican Republic and Haiti,a rhtythm very very infectious. I am sure that this album will become in an anthological album from african music."

"It's amazing what great music does to me. It lifts me up much better than any psychotropic medication could ever do. Putumayo is right. Their music does make me feel good. I own so many of their CDs and I always look forward to new releases. This CD is one of the most beautiful CDs I've ever owned. Looks like I'll have to buy Tuku Music now!!"
