CD Reviews

An overlooked gem from the R.E.M. family tree.
Robert Burns | Tallahassee, Florida United States | 06/03/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"You can disregard the R.E.M. connections (bassist and primary songwriter Linda Stipe, Her brothers photograph for the 2nd e.p. cover and lyrics for one of the songs) and the fact that Matthew Sweet was a member. The fact is that this amazing music stands quite well on it's own legs. Catchy, up-front bass lines, jangling guitars and wonderful vocals from future Magnapop-er Linda Hopper are pefect for these catchy melodies, quirky (sometimes mysterious)lyrics and high spirited rhythms. These two fabulous e.p.s along w/ many previously un-released live tracks make this fine CD a must have for fans of 80s esoterica or those who just appreciate great music. I had almost given up hope of seeing this bands music reach the light of day on CD when this came out.Don't let this one slip away.If you do you'll kick yourself later."
Much Better Than Just Oh-Ok!
Steven D. Handley | Bentonville, Ar. | 06/04/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This great music deserves more reviews than it has here. I thought this band sounded interesting when I saw their CD as a reissue in a catalog recently but I had no idea it would become one of my very favorites. The basic and spare sound takes a little getting used to at first but the girls in this band are completely charming and likeable and the music will grow on you quickly, the drum playing is excellent also. The most surprising part to me was how good all the recorded live songs are that did'nt make it to either of their EP's. Many of these were recorded in clubs and the sound quality isn't always great but to me that just adds to the charm of this record. This album is one catchy song after another. The only sad part is when you hear the scattered applause from some of their small audiences and think about what a shame it is that this band did'nt get more recognition in the short time they were together, they deserved it, they were awesome. I really don't believe that 5 stars should be given to many CD's, it should be saved only for the very best. I think Oh-Ok deserves it because of the historical significance (you can hear influences of their music in bands that came along much later) and because this music is just so catchy and likeable. There aren't any bad songs on it in my opinion. I'm just thankful that this gem from 1982-1983 was reissued, otherwise I would have never have heard this great music."
