CD Reviews

Loop digging disguised as a mix
Hubcap | Washington, DC | 01/28/2010
(2 out of 5 stars)

"I found this disappointing. I own and enjoy a lot of the Soul Cal and Now-Again catalog and was looking forward to a nice ADD-style mix. But this CD is pretty lazy. It sounds like Oh No picked parts of 30 songs he liked, threw them together and moved on. There's very little effort to make it flow. The mixing is barely there and the sequencing is choppy. I'm no DJ purist - I dig the Madlib off-the-cuff style - but seriously, some of the transitions sound like what I did when I was 13, turning the VOL knob down to zero to cut off a song on a mixtape.

I don't want to dog Oh No. He can and has done better - check his Ethiopium mix for a better showcase of his abilities. IMO this should have been marketed as a beats-and-pieces compilation and not as a finished product. If I were looking for hooks for a hip-hop track I would eat this up. But as a straight-up listening experience I'd pass."
