Synopsis

Album Description
After previously releasing a full length on Unique Leader Records, touring the US with top death metal acts and being heralded as one of the genre's biggest up and coming bands, Odious Mortem return with their new album and Willowtip debut Cryptic Implosion. Pummeling, extremely technical and forward thinking Cryptic Implosion is an album that will take the scene by storm and establish the band as one of the best technical death metal bands in the world.

CD Reviews

Technical Death Metal spiced with a bit of jazzy-melody...

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Now this is a beautiful example of technical death metal. The proficiency is all here, and what Odious Mortem brings to the table with this release is a bit of estranged melody, not really found in technical metal (with the exception of bands like Neuraxis). Another impressive bit was how KC kicked it DOWN a notch with the blast beats. Sure, you will hear a ton of blasting, but unlike all these bands that blast from start to finish, he goes into some pretty crazy jazz oriented syncopated beats instead of blasting soullessly. The bass is not only audible, but actually has a nice crispy active tone as well! And Joel is one hell of a bassist to say the least. My least favorite thing here are the vocals which are extremely one dimensional, but at least are more mid-range than extreme low cookie-monster. The interlude between Domain of the Eternal Paradox and Collapse of Recreation is actually really interesting. The solo provided by Ron Jarzombek on Collapse is shredding and seamless as to be expected. The production is clean, but lacks some of the upper-highs, and is extremely thin in the sub tones (as if the highs and lows were eliminated as a means of cramming more Mid-Range bits into available space, to make this album louder in RMS than anything else. Not a good compromise)."
Moments of brilliance overshadow some tedius and uninspired

"There's a lot to like in Odious Mortem's Crptic Implosion. There are some really nice solos, some really memorable and complex riffs and the kind of incredible control and musicianship thats almost standard in the genre. but thats exactly the problem here. Odious Mortem do little to go beyond the standard for me.

Thats not to say there aren't standout tracks. Vile Progeny has more great riffs in its short 3:16 runtime than many death metal bands manage in a full album. there are a couple solos in "the endless regressio of mind" that are so spot on it almost brings a tear to my eye. Unfortunately, other songs are so completely forgetable that you start to space out. I hate to say this, but there's a definite same-ness from song to song. sometimes its hard not to get lost in the sea double-bass clicks and endless noodling. The point is, it IS possible to be this complex, but also memorable. Necrophagist did it, psycroptic did it, hell, Odious Mortem did it IN THIS ALBUM, I just don't think they're doing it consistantly quite yet."
