Synopsis

Acclaimed mariachi singer Nydia Rojas lends her gorgeous vocals to a dozen or so standards by Mexican singer-songwriter Juan Gabriel on Nydia, her debut pop collection. Rojas's connection with Gabriel began when she was 5-years-old (she used to perform his songs at East Los Angeles restaurants), but the pair didn't formally meet until years later, when Rojas was asked to open Gabriel's tour. The musical connection is evident on Nydia, which finds Rojas breathing new life into some of Gabriel's overlooked gems. The delicate "Siempre en Mi Mente" is an absolutely gorgeous moment, as is the midtempo "Me Gusta Bailar" and "No Vale la Pena," which features Gabriel sharing vocal duties. Rojas also stays true to her roots on mariachi versions of "No Vale la Pena" and "Ya lo Se Que Tu te Vas," both of which brim with charisma and confidence. --Joey Guerra

CD Reviews

She's the best!

"I own Florecer and Si Me Conocieras, LOVED the latter but not the former but when I picked up Nydia three days ago after reading about her releasing it, I haven't stopped listening to it since. I play it in the car, at work, and at home. It's fantastic! This young woman can sing or as we say in the South, "she can sang". I mean no matter what the song is, she does justice to it. All of the songs on this CD are so expressive and moving but my favorites are "Debo Hacerlo" and "Te Lo Pido Por Favor". When I hear "Debo...", I can't resist moving and dancing even when I'm at work and I'm older than 50! God has given this young lady a gift and she uses it well!"

"I met Nydia when she was first starting out and needless to say she is a very personable well...person...but that's besides the point, if you listen to her first album and compare it to the new one, you can tell how much she has amazingly matured vocally...I have always loved her singing and it seems her range and her talents grow and progress with each album...on this album she does all Juan Gabriel tunes...with the opening intro. of "Siempre en Mi Mente" I was totally sold, the harmonies are solid and beautiful and of course they are all her...comparing her to Christina Aguilera is not very appealing...Nydia's talents go beyond Ms. Aguilera's, not to say that I don't like her because I do, but Nydia has a totally differnt sound and vibe to hear and does not try to sound exactly the same no matter what she sings...anyhow I hope you will read this and pick up the album, believe me you won't be disappointed and if this is your first Nydia album, it would be worth it to pick the other 3 also..."
