Charles Mackerras is one of the most purely musical and versatile conductors around. In fact, he's never made a bad record, and this Nutcracker is outstanding. It also served as the soundtrack to a movie version of the ballet, and Mackerras's interpretation has a sense of cinematic spectacle that's very appropriate. He brings superb drama to the action sequences: the battle with the Mouse King, bustling Christmas scenes at the opening, and the "transformation" of the Christmas tree. In the second act (which is where most of the famous Suite comes from), each of the dances is sharply characterized. In short, a great performance. --David Hurwitz

"Of all the recordings of the Nutcracker that I've heard, this is my favorite (and not just because its from a movie that featured my home town troupe - the PNB). Everything is perfect tempo wise - from the overture to the cute little opera excerpt at the end. No dragging waltzes to tick me off. The loud cannons during the fighting scenes can get annoying after awhile - but the way Mackerras delivers this classic makes up for this and for a movie that sports a lot of elbow and ankle shots. The Sendak cover is great too!"
This is an Excellent CD!!!

"I think this CD is wonderful! I dance in the nutcracker ballet and it is just like the performance music. This CD helps you to imagine that you're there and you are dancing along with all the other dancers!!!!"
