CD Reviews

Kicks the stuffing out of you, but you'll enjoy the ride
Brian Dunn | San Jose, CA United States | 12/05/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Japan has the second largest music industry in the world. Of course there is a lot of sappy pop music, just like in American and the UK, but they also have some of the best bands in the world. Even though Japanese bands are for the most part ignored outside of Japan, they match the best the West has to offer, and in some cases even surpass their Western counterparts. And Number Girl is one of the best anywhere. Having garnered fans in the US through their appearance at SXSW, they have proven they can rock hard right along side the best rock bands in the world.Following their 99 release, School Girl Distortional Addict, this 2000 release gives fans even more hard hitting rock tunes ripe with body-moving melodies and ear-popping guitars and screaming. They can go from melodic, groove-to-the-music soft, to loud, distorted, throw-your-body-into-the-moshpit hard. And this album really shows off how well they can rock. If you thought all Japanese music was kabuki and koto, "samurai music," this album will show you that Japan is right along side us in the 21st Century. High points on the album (as if there were any low points...):1 - Brutal Number Girl
2 - Zegen Vs. Undercover
4 - Urban Guitar Sayonara
6 - Tattoo
7 - Sappukei
8 - U-Rei (Spirit/Ghost)
9 - Yaruse Nakio's Beat
10 - Trampoline Girl
11 - Brutal ManThis is a must have for any loud rock n roll fan's collection. I can't recommend it highly enough."
