CD ReviewsThis is the "Texas" Novas, not "The Crusher" Novas David B. Dennard | Dallas, TX United States | 06/30/2006 (4 out of 5 stars) "Just to clarify some on-going confusion regarding The Novas, this is a CD by the Dallas, Texas-based band, recorded during 1965 for the Sump'n Else TV show, with some additional tracks dating to 1968. I know because I was the bass player and I played on all of these recordings.
The confusion stems from another band named The Novas who hail from Minnesota and released "The Crusher" on the Parrot label back in the mid-60s. That novelty song was subsequently covered by other bands in the punk era and beyond. It's a fun song, sung in a fake wrestler voice a la the Cookie Monster or Rob Zombie. It was way ahead of it's time, in my opinion, but it has nothing to do with the Dallas, Texas version of The Novas. Interestinglyt, we still perform together as The Novas in 2006 and we've been asked occasionally to perform "The Crusher" in our live shows, so the confusion continues. Actually, my other bandmates had never heard "The Crusher" until I downloaded it and played it for them at rehearsal last week. - David Dennard, The Novas (Dallas, TX)" |
