CD Reviews

Breath taking!
Amy Wong | 01/12/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is one of the most gorgeous music scores I've ever listened to. Simple as that. It's based around a few musical themes (ie a love theme, a Lara theme, a togetherness theme). However, these themes are dispersed so nicely, there is never the feeling of listening to the same track several times. The music itself is based around the clarinet (the instrument played by the main character, Lara), the oboe, piano and various stringed instruments.

All the tracks are nice, but the ones that really shine are #2 ("beyond silence" suite), #5 (ice dance--my favorite track of ANY musical score!), #13 (love theme).

I suppose the only complaint I can voice is the strange choice of vocal themes: Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" and Crispian St. Peters "You Were On My Mind." While I love "I Will Survive," it seems a strange song to play in the background of Lara and Tom's budding romance scenes. And I absolutely hate "You Were On My Mind" which is not only a lousy song, but it has no relevence whatsoever to the movie.

Oh, well. The rest of the score is so amazingly brilliant, one bad song doesn't warrant the reduction of a star. If I could, I would give this score 10 stars, because it really is a perfect ten! If you can find a copy of this score anywhere, buy it!

While I was in Germany a few years ago, I made the interesting observation that there were no German songs on the radio! Yes, they steal OUR songs. So, if lack of German understanding deters you, don't worry; both the track listing and songs are completely in English. Need I mention again that this is the best movie score ever?"
