"Nicodemus(aka st.nic of detroit)and Matchez have done it again and again, and again for 40 years now!
When I first heard of these two it was 1994, I found them interesting so I decided to look into them some more, and I was amazed to discover that they together have been releasing music since 1970, and Nicodemus himself since 1962! When I first found out about Nicodemus there were only two Nicodemus's out there
(st.nic of detroit and a raggae releasing Jamacan Nicodemus), Now there are a few posers attempting to go somewhere with an already legendary established name, the thought of it makes me mad!
But thats besides the point, the point here is the music, the non-linear space folk/rock psychedellic head music trip these two put together for our enjoyment which from beginning to end is a maze of locked doors with you being the key holder.
This CD appeals to all crowds who have the attention span to listen to it more than once. With each play you hear more and more, from whats up front in your face to whats subliminal waiting for your brain to pick up.
This isn't the kind of Cd you do the dishes to, you've gotta' sit back and listen in order to get it. I highly suggest track 1-sometmes I cant sleep, Track 2- Oh my Darling, Track 9- Red Thread, and the last two tracks 15 and 16,really suck you in too.
In my searching I found three cassettes Nicodemus and Matchez released, six songs on this CD are from the cassette Changing the Future(1990), another six songs are from the cassette 9-daze B-4 X-mas(1991), and two songs from Beveled Glass(1992). The bass and Guitar work on this are the best and Nicodemus's vocals sends "chills up your spine" to Quote Jello Biafra. Now in this year(2003) i've aquired 8 different CD's released after A Light in the Dark, and to put it bluntly, if this is a 5 star rated release, then the following material would be rated 6 at minimum.
This is definately a head CD, so make sure your head is in the right place when you listen.
