CD Reviews

Vicious!
Brutal Honesty | New York NY USA | 10/10/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Ghostborn has arrived! This first effort by " Ghostwheel" (the pseudonym of the ambitious Dobo Radichkov) is an auditory safari into the soul of what Depeche Mode is all about (and fans know exactly what I mean). What I like most about this album is the ambience, he really does a superb job at creating a haunting mood. These days it's hard to find an album that flows well from beginning to end, and Ghostweel does a great job of doing that. I also like how his voice changes from one song to the next, which gives each song its own character. Now that I've heard the songs in their entirety, I appreciate them much more! "Sea of Sin" and "Newborn" (my favorite) should be played on progressive radio stations like BBC 6 music. The other songs like "Darkest Star" parts 1 and 2 are so well done, they make Depeche Mode's version sound like it was produced with Playskool toys! He does a good job of upstaging the Mode on some songs, like "Get Right with Me" and "Sometimes" (my second favorite--that should be on the radio too). I love the entire album from start to finish--it's vicious! The CD itself is also worthy of mention. The booklet is absolutely well put together and the photography is beautiful. Other tribute albums don't come to near to expressing the dark and soulful side of the Mode like Ghostwheel has (and I bet Depeche Mode would agree). As a tribute album, it stands up to its name."
Awful and disappointing

"Everything was fine, the music, the atmosphere it created, the instrumental part was just fine and according to expectations. Everything was going great until... the guy starts to sing. I thought it was some kind of joke. Whatever was worth of the music was torn to pieces when listening to a cartoonish, deliberately exaggerated nasal style of singing. Do not know what was he trying to accomplish, but is very far from being a tribute at all. I couldn't get past the third song. It was more like an electronic tribute to the Backyardigans."
