Here's a nice, inexpensive way to get Chopin's two piano concertos on a single disc. Both Emil Gilels and André Watts are fine exponents of the composer's particular brand of elegance and pianistic flair, and they understand the music's strengths and weaknesses better than most. These concertos are early works, not all that interestingly orchestrated (with maybe one exception, Chopin never wrote for orchestra again), and not very well put together formally. What they do have is a full fund of characteristically wonderful tunes, and you can almost hear Chopin sigh after getting through the first movements, which are supposed to be "developmental." After that, it's just melody. --David Hurwitz

CD Reviews

Romantic classics

"These 2 concertos are my favorite Chopin pieces, and at a price that's hard to beat for such superb performances. Concerto # 1 is masterfully played by the incredible Emil Gilels, and few melodies can top the soaring beauty of the main theme in the first movement...I've always thought of it as the most romantic music ever written.Concerto # 2 is performed by one of America's finest, André Watts, and he plays up to his usual standard of pure excellence. His interpretation of the second movement has such tendreness...he seems to coax love from the piano keys. This one is backed by Thomas Schippers, who in his all too short and brilliant career, left us some inspired recordings. If you like Chopin, you can't miss with this terrific CD."
Best Recording of Chopin Concertos

"This is the most incredibly sensitive recording of the 2 Chopin Piano Concertos that I've heard on the market today. Arrau's interpretation of the Piano score is unrealistically perfect both technically, and especially musically. Gilels intermingles heart, wit, humor, love, emotion, and romance in the f minor concerto, however his interpretation is seamless and matches wits with Arrau, and it is difficult to tell the two pianists apart from listening to this recording. I STRONGLY urge classical music listeners to order this recording."
Outstanding with two different pianists and conductors

"Eugene Ormandy was famous for his outstanding collaborations with great soloists. His opening of the 1st Concerto here is just about perfect. The sound is big but the music moves just right. Then Mr. Gilels enters and sheer magic. He was one of the greatest pianists of all time and this performance is simply wonderful. The 2nd Concerto has equally great musicians but with Andre Watts and Thomas Schippers instead. No problem, just another great recording. Unfortunately, Sony has apparently deleted this recording and so the Marketplace price is double the original. Hopefully it will come back soon."
