The CD is hosted by Desmond Tutu with an introduction by Nelson Mandela. Originally broadcast on National Public Radio, the CD features an extraordinary recordings, including:

- Tapes, left forgotten and decaying in a government archive, from the 1964 Rivonia Trial in which Mandela and five others were sentenced to life imprisonment.
- A secret recording of Mandela in prison that had been hidden by a guard for over 30 years.
- First-person accounts of former activists, generals, National Party politicians, Robben Island prisoners and guards, and everyday witnesses to history.
- Voices of key figures, including Mandela, Tutu, and former President F.W. de Klerk.
