Neil Larsen's Through Any Window CD
Darriel A. Williams | 05/09/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I actually bought this title by Neil Larsen, his first installment of some of his best work. He has played on over 150 albums so it's no surprise to me why he didn't try his hand at doing a solo project. I remember in the early 90's playing this tape to death till it got caught up in my tape player. It's been years now, well over 10 before I got my hands on this piece of work again just a month ago and I'm so glad that I did. This album really impressed me even though all of the songs were not top bangers, but yet there were plenty songs on there to give you your money's worth. The first tract was Carnival that started off with a good helping of rhythms that arrived from the Carribean,a little latin, and a hint of calypso. Then we go to Miss Baby Larue that perked your interest even more for listening and then you hit the song Blind Spot that brings that nice medium tempo rhythm like you would hear from band greats like Toto which goes along the beat of Rosanna. I really liked this tune especially since one of my favorite drummers, Steve Ferrone is laying down the law on those crispy hi-hats and that nice tight snare. Then we go to songs like Alborada which has a good drive and is mellow but with a medium tempo, good driving music! Then we have Tonar that's a great tune and last but not least my all time favorite on this cd is " Through Any Window" oddly enough. For me, this song is a slow tune but made for someone who is a hopeless romantic and has a vivid imagination of what good lovin is, or being in love for that matter. This album is very reasonablely priced at the time that I bought it. It was used but in near mint condition for only $11.95 so I wasted no time in purchasing it. Don't let this cd slip through your fingers if the price is even near the $20 mark since this cd is almost 20 years old(1990) and out of print. You can get this overseas, but you will pay out the ying yang like I did when I bought his second album "Smooth Talk" out of Japan. This cd is a collection that won't leave the house for sure. I give this album 3 stars. I only give 4 stars if all of he songs are banging. Anyway, a good cd for someone who loves jazz or is a musician at heart."
