CD Reviews

BeJae breaks out !!!
B. Taylor | Ft. Worth, TX USA | 07/14/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I knew BeJae as a part of the folk duo Jim Ritchie and BeJae Fleming, long ago in Texas. I always wished I could hear more of BeJae when they performed. She was stellar at adding light but beautiful harmonies to Jim's strong tunes, but I never felt that I got enough of HER, no sense of her voice as a lone wolf, and was always going away hungry for more. Now, many years later, I have discovered that BeJae is out on her own, and I have just spent a long drive to Austin and back listening to her CD over and over. It holds up, bearing repeated listening, a good clue to a great album.
At long last there is plenty of BeJae, raw, self-disclosing, hauntingly honest, soul fillet-ed on a platter, with a beautiful resilient voice and emotionality that treats the listener to the truth. Her words stay with you long after the CD is over, her musicianship, its appropriation of folk and blues so lovely, fresh, and satisfying that you never want it to stop. Just when I had decided on a song I wanted to perform myself, my favorite on the CD, here would come yet another that expanded my understanding...but She Walks the Wire is the one that hit me in the heart. You FEEL the heartland, the blues, the vitality, the search, and you relish the apparent victory that BeJae has achieved. The production is wonderful, and the musicians provide solid underpinnings for this intimate look at a rich and open life.
Hooray for BeJae ...I look forward to many more.

"The lyrics, Bejae's versatile voice, the simple but elegant back-up instrumentation, all give this album a living soul. This album is a treasure and one of my all time favorites. I hope she produces another soon."
