CD Reviews

Songs for the little crazy person in all of us
Alfonso Mangione | Chicago, IL United States | 02/21/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Rarely do I buy CDs after hearing the performer sing them live. After hearing Naomi Ashley perform at The Green Mill in Chicago, though, I plunked down my ten dollars and bought this excellent CD. (Actually it was my friend's ten dollars--but I would have plunked down mine if I'd had any cash on me.)

She sings side-splittingly silly songs. (Try saying that five times, real fast.) She sings of love and obsession and alcohol and bunny suits. If a guy wrote some if this--if he wrote, say, "Room in this Heart for Two," or "Blind Mute Torso of Love"--he'd be arrested. Police would be breaking down his doors with battering rams, looking for the victims described in this darkly comedic balladry. (Either that, or he'd be another Eminem, hounded by critics, politicians, and parents.) But since it's a she, it's OK--funny, even--to listen to.

My only complaints--quibbles really--are that this CD is too short, and that there's more instruments playing than are necessary, given the high quality of the lyrics. (It's only 22 minutes long, although most CDs would be well advised to shorten themselves if they could be this good.)

Anyway, order this, or check her out at The Green Mill--I saw her on a Sunday, right before the poetry slam, but I'm not sure if she sings there every week. Her CD will find a place in your heart--and your CD player."
You think your love life sucks...

"Listening to these wonderfully hilarious songs made me feel like my relationships were absolutely normal. Naomi's voice draws you in and you find yourself agreeing that the perfect man is a "Blind, Mute Torso of Love". My favorite song in Naomi's beautifully twisted collection, "Room in This Heart for Two", is a tender song about devotion (and stalking). If you are feeling down about your relationships, this album will make you realize how good you have it!"
Funny, sweet, and out of her mind

"Naomi Ashley does us all a favor by pulling together this initial sampling of her unique and twisted view of relationships. Catchy lyrics, hysterical situations, and a lovely and engaging manner make this a sit-down-and-listen-through album. You will enjoy this disc. And you'll probably laugh out loud."
